Helmet for my Pillow

Robert Leckies “Helmet for my Pillow” is an excellent and eloquent first person account of the war in the Pacific. Robert Leckie was a machine gunner and later scout in the 1st Marine Division. In his book he tells of his experience while assigned to the 1st Marine Division, from volunteering for the USMC all the way to the fierce battles of Guadalcanal, New Britain and Peleliu. While he is a more gifted writer then Eugene Sledge his account did not touch me in the way “With the old breed” did. He also writes about the madness of war at times very blunt at times in an almost poetic way but somehow for me all of this was better accessible in Eugene Sledges book. Still it is a first rate wartime memoir, way better than your “ordinary” WW2 biography. Should be required reading for anybody interested in the USMC and WW2.

Robert Leckie will be  featured in the mini series “The Pacific” as one of the main characters. You can check out a promotion clip here:
