U.S. Marines in World War II A Pictorial Tribute – Tarawa and the Marshalls

Good photo book by Eric Hammel. If you are interested in the battle of Tarawa or are planing to do a Tarawa impression this book is a must. More than two hundred photos taken during the campaigns in Tarawa and the Marshall Islands are shown in this hardcover book, some of which are rare and have never been published before. Some photos showing Japanese soldiers who have been killed or committed suicide are quite gruesome. The only thing i could criticize about this book is that sometimes it is very hard to make out details in the darker areas of the photos since the contrast is very high. Not sure if somebody tried to “improve” the old black and white photos by playing around with the contrast levels or if it has to do with the way the book was printed. A shame since many of the photos could have revealed so many more details and end up being rather useless in that respect.
