The Battle for Okinawa

The Battle for Okinawa by Hiromichi Yahara (with introduction and commentary by Frank B. Gibney).

This is NOT a detailed history of the battle for Okinawa, it’s more an episodic telling of the battle and the strategic  decisions involved form the perspective of Colonel Hiromichi Yahara, the most senior Japanese officer to survive the Battle. Nonetheless a very interesting book, how often do you get to read about PTO WW2 battles from a Japanese staff officers view? If you are looking for a detailed full account of the battle for Okinawa this might not be for you. If you want to learn about the strategic & tactical decisions of the Japanese side, the characters involved and their mindsets then this is a must read.
