Emperor Movie

“Emperor” is a movie from 2012 directed by Peter Webber, it is based on the book “His Majesty’s Salvation” by Shiro Okamoto. Watched the Blu-ray recently and didn’t expect too much from the movie, in the end I was pleasantly surprised. Here is the synopsis from the Blu-ray cover:

“A gripping tale of love and honor forged between fierce enemies of war, inspired by true events and starring Matthew Fox and Academy Award-winner Tommy Lee Jones as General Douglas MacArthur. Immediately after Emperor Hirohito’s World War II surrender, General MacArthur (Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation. He challenges his expert on Japanese culture – General Fellers (Fox) – to provide evidence in 10 short days to decide if the Japanese Emperor, worshipped as a god by his people but accused of war crimes, should be punished or saved. The fate of a nation awaits…”

I found it a pretty nice and enjoyable movie. A bit slow, (almost) no action, no superheroes, nothing for the masses who have no interest in this part of history… not too surprising that it was a commercial flop. The film is expertly photographed and the effects and production design are very good (especially since the budget was probably limited by Hollywood standards).

  1. Just finished Manchester´s American Caesar. Now that I have become a General’s fanboy not sure if I should jump on this. Moreso as there is no Euro version of it yet at Amazon.

  2. Well Tommy Lee Jones is great as MacArthur… 😀 Though the movie is not everybody’s taste. German Blu-ray/DVD release will be in October so maybe other EU releases will follow. You can always wait for a price drop 🙂
